Hugo is one of the most popular open-source static site generators. With its amazing speed and flexibility, Hugo makes building websites fun again.
Why Hugo?
There are many reasons to choose Hugo for your next project:
- Blazing fast builds - Hugo builds sites in milliseconds, not minutes
- No dependencies - Hugo is a single binary, no runtime needed
- Markdown-based - Write your content in simple Markdown files
- Flexible templating - Go templates give you full control over output
- Built-in features - Taxonomies, menus, sitemaps, and more out of the box
Getting Started
To create a new Hugo site, you just need to run:
hugo new site my-blog
cd my-blog
Then create your first post:
hugo new blog/my-first-post.md
Local Development
Hugo includes a built-in development server with live reload:
hugo server --buildDrafts
This starts a local server at http://localhost:1313 that automatically reloads when you make changes.
Building for Production
When you’re ready to publish, simply run:
hugo --minify
This generates your static site in the public/ directory, ready to deploy anywhere.
Hugo is designed to work the way you do. Organize your content however you want with any URL structure. Group your content using taxonomies. Define your own content types. And use shortcodes for reusable content.
